Our Projects

Our fight against hunger started 40 years ago. There has been alot of "living" in our old buildings - renewed little lives as well as some sad deaths form part of the panorama of memories that have taken place here. The old wooden buildings were second-hand barracks donated by a construction company. These buildings have helped to provide healthcare and have given shelter. Now due to the effects of the tropical weather and this mountain lake climate our main Nutrition Hospital Builiding is fast becoming a hazard itself.

Our most important project at this time is the rebuilidng of the Nutritional Hospital. For this to be accomplished the Girls' Dorm and the Casita Feliz (Phase I) must be completed first so that the girls and the little nutrion patients have a place to move to before their old residence is torn down for reconstruction.

Other important projects include the rebuilding of the Boys Dorm and the Bakery, as well as the construcion of an educational building, administration offices, and a comercial building in which to sell products from our Campus to a growing base of tourist to the Lake Yojoa region.

Due to the effects of the tropical mountain lake climate our main Nutrition Hospital Builiding is fast becoming a hazard because of the deteriorating wooden structure.

Our New Hospital Building will be built of concrete and steel to avoid future deterioration and make preventive maintance easier and more feaseable. This New Hospital has been designed with our present needs in mind and will be more comfortable functionally than our present facility. It will have a capacity to care for 40 recovering malnourished patients and will have a four-bed special-care area for children who need special attention. There will also be a clinic area which will include a dental room and a minor surgery/suture room. The laundry will be washed and dried within the confines of this building to prevent the loss of clothing items to various elements. Finally the main dining hall for the Homes, as well as the Hospital will be in this building.

For thirty-five years the Girls Dorm has been Home to girls who for one reason or another have been unable to return to their homes of origin. The South Wing of the Hospital Building has historically been the living quarters for several hundred girls over the years. However the climate has been such that the building in which the girls live now is fast deteriorating and currently the rooms are leaky and the walls are not very strong due to termites.

Now after many years of sharing a building with the Nutrition Hospital, for the first time the girls will have a real home of their very own.

The New Girls Dorm has been designed to provide shelter in a comfortable home setting for up to 45 girls, it has an apartment for the house mother and a large livingroom area to hold daily devotionals. There is a basement for storage, as well as two small apartments for single mothers who are on our staff.

This new building is currently under construction, and is made entirely out of concrete and steel. Building began in February 2003 thanks to the concerted fundraising efforts of Hope Blackford and many church members in the state of Missouri. Additionally there have been numerous other financial supporters of this project who have all put in a great effort to make this new Girls' Home a reality. Originally this project was more modest in size and cost, however due to the terrain that was selected as the construction site, the building for various reasons was enlarged and therefore both the cost and the size were increased. It will be a very nice facility upon completion!
