5.10.2009 Mother’s Day Celebrated by our Children on Campus |
Our children, organized by Marlene – once nutrition hospital patient when she was a toddler and a resident of the Children’s Home growing up, now one of our cooks and a mother herself - put together a Mother’s Day program in honor of all of the mother’s who live on our campus. The highlight of the evening was a skit based on a story from the Bible where King Solomon was called to judge which of two women was a baby’s birth-mother. Following the program a meal was served. Our children are quite talented and enjoy putting together these special programs and acting in skits.

3.21.09 Spring Break 2009 |

A record 97 visitors volunteered their time and skills on our PAHS campus during Spring Break this year! As our new buildings get finished, we are able to accommodate more helpers, but some of these spilled over onto the floor in our chapel, as well as accepted the hospitality of our neighbors. Our children made new friends, and we are all so thankful for the progress that was made on the new Nutrition Hospital Building and for the doors and closets on boy’s wing of the children’s home that are now almost done!

Nate Marin and 21 members of his Spanish class from Campion Academy in Colorado, plus 10 sponsors, took a working field trip to our campus to muscle through concrete and earth digging footings for the roof over what will be the new dining hall for the Nutritional Center and Children’s Home. The old terrazzo floor from the former children’s ward was preserved, so our family will soon have a dry place to eat when it is raining. They also brought new white tennis shoes for PE class for all of our school children -- received with much excitement and some disbelief. We are very grateful for their thoughtfulness.

3.12.09 Richardson SDA Church |
Led by Stephan Gray, a group of 32 volunteers from Richardson Seventh-Day Adventist Church was welcomed back for the second time. In 2006 they poured the walls on the boy’s wing, and now they inaugurated that same wing by being the first to stay there after our Canadian friends plumbed it. They put in many sunny hours and a lot of muscle work lifting concrete all the way up to the 9 ft. level for the walls of what will be our new Children’s Hospital Ward. They even left us the funds to get the roof up. How exciting to see a new profile rising in the place where we were accustomed to see the old Children’s Hospital for 4 decades! They held a Vacation Bible School for neighborhood children and a devotional for our family in the evenings.

They are part of the group who has done the biggest share of the construction of our children’s home – this was that teams 8th year, and we missed several members who didn’t make it this year. Our children have many lovely memories and feel a special love from their friends who keep returning.

Both are exceptionally cheerful and loving. Special thanks to God for His healing power and to each of you who make this work possible!

2.11.09 Oakhurst SDA Church Group and Mend a Child Gets New Hospital Building Started |
Our dear friends from California, who in the past 4 years built the lovely Casita Feliz where the little malnourished ones are housed at present, now have taken the initiative to begin rebuilding the new Children’s Nutritional Rehab Hospital ward. Another 28 volunteers, led by Dr. Tom and Calle Wieg, joined Gary and LeRoy (who had arrived in January) to do the heavy, though largely unseen, job of breaking through and then reinforcing the old foundation so they could anchor I-beam uprights ready for walls and a roof. Then they hauled wheel-borrow loads of concrete to pour a new slab. Through the Mend A Child Foundation they continue to help provide a monthly educational funds for our children, for which we are all most grateful! Dr. Tom Wieg, a talented photographer as well as a dentist, has made up beautiful sets of cards for the sponsors of each of our school children. More sponsors are needed. See www.mendachild.org

02.09.2009 Mel’s Dream Team Accomplishment |
Mel was a plumber in Alberta, Canada, who learned about the difficult situation we had with the plumbing in the boy’s wing of the Children’s Home at a family reunion. He immediately expressed a desire to come down and help us. Two weeks later he was killed in a tragic accident. Twelve of his plumbing colleagues, friends, and family members got together to make his dream of service come true. Our new friends from Alberta, Canada departed today having accomplished their mission and more – for they had installed all the remaining plumbing in the center apartments for Mami Verlene and the Home Parents, as well as beautifully finishing off the bathrooms in the Boy’s Wing complete with tiling the shower stalls and floors. During their stay they brought a wonderful sense of camaraderie with nightly hymn-sings accompanied by guitars.

With the help of Canadian volunteers, Todd Lien and Diane Ward, the Oakhurst SDA Youth group rebuilt the home of the Moreno family up on Mount Santa Barbara. The family’s former home, built of mud and stone, had been blown down in December by strong winds while the father was away with the oldest child in the hospital. The Moreno family came to have a relationship with PAHS through the illness of their oldest child Baylin who battled kidney failure for the last five years. The new home is made of wooden walls and has shuttered windows and a solid door. In spite of the tremendous struggles against disease, loss, grief and weather elements the family is still able to smile and is very grateful for the support they have received.

Baylin Moreno, who we first met in November 2002 when she was brought to our Nutrition Hospital, lost her valiant and courageous battle against kidney failure on February 12, 2008 at the age of 13. Baylin is survived by her father, mother and 5 younger siblings. Baylin leaves behind many sad but inspired caretakers as well. She and her family would travel three days a week from her remote mountain village to the city for dialysis. Her quiet but solid courage is a testament to the human spirit and to the will to survive against the odds.

We were happy to be able to pass along supplies to the Government Hospital Mario Catarino Rivas in San Pedro Sula. We received a generous donation of hospital gowns from the Adventist Community Service Depot in Keene, Texas. The Hospital's representative was most grateful as his hospital is in constant need of materials and supplies.
