Pan American Health Service, Inc. is a non-denominational Christian, non-government organization, which currently operates in the Mountains of North Western Honduras near Lake Yojoa in Peña Blanca, Honduras, Central America.

"Nutrition and Educational Outreach for the Hungry, Sick and Homeless."
PAHS focuses primarily on childhood malnutrition and basic education for people with few resources.
The work of PAHS starts with providing nutrition and medical assistance to starving children. Some do not go home after recovery and are afforded the opportunity to live and grow up on the Peña Blanca Campus in the PAHS Homes.
The PAHS educational program serves the underprivilaged who wish to receive a basic, secondary or vocational education.

Who was Dr. Stephen Youngberg? |
 Stephen A. Youngberg, born in South Dakota, was the son of Norwegian immigrant parents who took him to the mission field in India when he was one year old. Stephen grew up in India observing as his parents served the poorest of the poor, thus was born his love for the less privileged.
After marrying Verlene DeWitt in 1942, he attended Loma Linda University Medical School graduating in 1946. He was commissioned as a Captain in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in 1954. During the 1950's Dr. Youngberg worked in Southern Mexico helping to establish a medical mission there, he later  owned succesful medical practices in South Texas.
After co-founding Pan American Health Service, Inc. in 1959, he moved his family to the Central American country of Honduras in 1960 following the sale of his medical practices in Texas. Dr. Youngberg loved and was dearly loved by the poor of the region which he served for forty-one years. Dr. Youngberg died in 2001 and he is buried in the PAHS campus cemetery in Peña Blanca.

 Honduras is a Central American country, governed by democracy. It obtained its independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. Its area covers 112,090 square kilometers and it has a population of 6,941,000, of which 4.2 million inhabitants are under the age of 25. Of the able-bodied labor force, 42% are unemployed or underemployed. Honduras is known for its natural beauty. Treasures such as the Bay Islands, long stretches of beach, and the national parks that protect virgin jungles make this country a delight to explore and a wonder to experience. The Mayan Ruins in Copan are the country's pride and are the main tourist attraction. |
Peña Blanca is a small town, two miles off of the northern shores of Lake Yojoa – the only inland lake in the country. Lake Yojoa is nestled in a basin at the foot of Mount Santa Barbara on its western shores and Cerro Azul Meambar on its eastern shores, and it is known for its wide variety of flora and fauna. This mountainous region is home also to many of the neediest people in the country. |
