Honduras is a Central American country, governed by democracy. It obtained its independence from Spain on September 15, 1821. Its area covers 112,090 square kilometers and it has a population of 6,941,000 , of which 4.2 million inhabitants are under the age of 25. Of the able-bodied labor force, 42% are unemployed or underemployed.

Honduras is one of the poorest contries in Central America. Its population relies heavily on agriculture for income. Sugarcane, coffee and bananas are the major cash crops that are exported. Banana exports were the biggest source of income in the country until the beginning of 2000. Now exports from the many clothing manufacturers represent a significant source of income to the Honduran people.

The Textile Industry has increased in size since the mid 1990's and is fast becoming one of the main sources of employment in the country. This industry generates more than 10% of the employment in the country. The main employers for the labor force are small businesses.

Honduras is known for its natural beauty. Treasures such as the Bay Islands, long stretches of beach, and the national parks that protect virgin jungles make this country a delight to explore and a wonder to experience. The Mayan Ruins in Copan are the country's pride and are a main tourist attraction.

About Peña Blanca

Peña Blanca ( White Boulder) is the largest town located near the shores of Lake Yojoa. It is located 64 kilometers south of San Pedro Sula. The town is a primary commercial village. This is where people from the surrounding mountain region come down to buy their basic supplies and staple foods.

Peña Blanca, as a town, began to develop because of the construction of the hydroelectric canal that funnels lake water down the mountain to produce electricity, and to the coffee production in the area. In 1960 when Dr. Stephen Youngberg first arrived in Peña Blanca the town consisted of only three little cabins along the road. Since the Youngberg's arrival 45 years ago Peña Blanca has grown and now has a population of 10,000 people.
