Health Program
The original intent of PAHS was to improve the health of poor people living in impoverished communities. Today, well into our fifth decade of operations we continue to improve health by providing basic healthcare for families with little or no financial means. Our primary focus is nutritional rehabilitation for infants and toddlers and young children who have not received adequate nutrients to meet their growth needs. We provide basic health care, medicine and nutritional rehab for those living in poverty, and in this way we help to prevent more serious illnesses and death.
Outpatient Clinic
• Parents living in poverty with small children, single parents, grandparents raising grandchildren, elderly people, the children in our Homes and our staff members and their families are the main beneficiaries of our Outpatient Clinic. The Clinic is staffed by a nurse. Patients are given a consultation and medications as their condition warrants.
Nutritional Rehabilitation

• Children between the ages of one and eight years are admitted for treatment of first, second and third degree malnutrition. Typically the parent or guardian is advised that the child will need to remain in treatment for two to six months depending on the severity of nutritional deficiencies. A lacto-ovo vegetarian diet is provided, including soy-based foods, whole-wheat bread and fruits and vegetables. The medical regimen includes oral vitamins, injectable vitamins (in the acute phase) and medications for any condition the child may have due to their weakened immunity resulting from malnutrition. The malnourished child typically begins to show significant improvement within the first five days, looking healthy within the first month of treatment. A recovering child is kept in treatment for 1 – 6 months after they appear to have fully regained their health to ensure a full recovery.
Community Health

Communities are screened according to the number of children admitted to our Nutrition Hospital , and a health team or social worker is sent to the community to search for potential patients and to educate adults in the community on signs of malnutrition. Also a member of the staff follows up on the condition of small patients that have returned home in order to help their reintegration process.
